What a week we have had. We spent the night in the hospital with Kaitlyn after her surgery. All in all, I'd say that part went better than expected. They had her in a normal hospital bed but that didn't seem to phase her. For awhile she was pretty out of it and she would dose for short periods of time. And every once in awhile it was almost normal! She would be sitting in the bed playing with some toys as though nothing was strange about that. The IV drove her nuts and made things difficult at times. She would get tangled up in it or she would try to pull it off.
She slept some that night but it seemed that they perfectly spaced vitals checks and pain meds so that they were bugging us every couple of hours. At some point I was getting pretty tired of having her woken up! We were relieved that she drank some and even ate some yogurt while we were there. But we were so happy to go home. Mommy for sure! Kaitlyn wouldn't let me out of her sight. She got super upset everytime I had to go to the bathroom and would cry until I came back.
The days since have been up and down. She has periods of time when she giggles and laughs and plays and you see the old Kaitlyn. But there are times when she is super unhappy. It breaks your heart. We have been trying to stay ahead of the pain so we have been giving pain meds on schedule. Even at night! So mom and dad are pretty tired. We decided it was time to try and stop the pain meds tonight so we are giving Tylenol a shot. She has been having these extreme fits for no apparent reason and we were starting to wonder if she is having bad side effects.
I'd love for Kaitlyn to be able to return to school on Friday. I'm sure she'd love to see her friends and teachers. We're just hoping things continue to improve.
